UK Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week

3rd May is World Maternal Mental Health Day and 1st - 7th May is UK Maternal Mental Health Awareness week.  The awareness week focussing on how and where mums and families can seek help and support for perinatal mental health problems is being co-ordinated by the Perinatal Mental Health Partnership.  Nightly #PNDhour on Twitter 8-9pm @PNDandMe

Each evening there will be a focus specifically on helping mums to seek help. Topics will be tied in with the themed days.

Monday 1st May – Invitation for local groups and peer support services to share details of their services

Tuesday 2nd May – How to access support from health care professionals:  PMHP will be running two Facebook Live sessions from PMHP’s Facebook page:

  • With pharmacist Dr Wendy Jones on safe antidepressants to take while nursing and with a maternal mental illness
  • With Dr Stephanie DeGiorgio, a GP and member of the PMHP, on how to approach GPs for help
Join in with the Facebook Live sessions and promote them via your networks using #maternalMHmatters
The Smile Group will be compiling a blog on overcoming obstacles to seeking help. PMHP will be promoting their positively received GP Checklist (accessible via their website) which mums can complete with their symptoms and pass to their health care professional if they are finding it difficult to verbalise their symptoms.

Wednesday 3rd May – World Maternal Mental Health Day – Perinatal Positivity Pot: PMHP have been working with Postpartum Support International and member organizations on plans for the day. PMHP will be encouraging the creation of a virtual positivity pot for people to dip into (encouraging the use of the hashtag #perinatalpostivitypot) and will be tweeting quotes from mums on what has helped them during their recovery.

Thursday 4th May – Self-Care:  PMHP will be posting about self-care during the day focusing on how it’s okay to focus on yourself and how to do this.

Friday 5th May – Tips and Tools to support recovery

To end the week on a positive note, PMHP will be sharing practical strategies for managing symptoms.  For more information go to PMHP's facebook page:
